Microsemi Releases First Series of SiC High Power Devices

A few years ago most of the HPA manufacturers were researching the next generation of high power devices on GaN and SiC. But is seems like most companies choose GaN for their next generation of devices and interest in SiC seemed to fade (except as a substrate material for GaN).

Over the past year, many companies have released new high power GaN devices and it seems to be taking off for many of the higher frequency applications and high voltage LDMOS seems to be doing the same for lower frequency applications. So I am excited to see Microsemi bringing SiC to the market with the release of a new family of high power devices and talked with them last week for a press briefing.

With a high operating voltage (125 V) and great thermal conductivity, these devices boost wider pulse widths, better reliability, and reduced size compared to the competing Si devices for next generation demands. They have typical power levels of 1400 W at 156 MHz and 1100 W at 405-450 MHz (300 micro sec pulse width, 10% duty cycle) plus can stand up to VSWR of 10:1 (which could be much higher after further testing) for these initial devices. Microsemi is first introducing these VHF and UHF devices followed by later releases of L-band and S-band devices. For more details, the release is available on our site. It should be interesting to follow how these devices evolve in the marketplace.

does that make me craaaaaazy?

Okay so I'm going to list a few interesting traits about me, and you can tell me if that makes me a crazy person. I have a feeling y'all think I'm crazy anyway, so I won't be too surprised :)

1. I really want to see a tornado. Like, in person, up close (not too close obviously). Maybe I get this from my dad, but I am completely fascinated with tornadoes and think they are so unbelievable. Dad and I used to sit on the porch watching storms roll in, and we'd watch show after show on the weather channel about tornado chasers...and ever since I've been hooked! Obviously, I'd want to see one at a safe distance where I know it couldn't come suck me up. :)

Like...this close would be good........................Probably not this close though.

2. I will buy a DVD just so that I can watch the 30 second bloopers in the special features.
Seriously, bloopers and outtakes give me joy in life! Maybe it's because I like seeing actors in their natural element and not being so perfect all the time... but it seriously cracks me up to see them lose it and get the giggles. My favorite bloopers of all time: The Office. Steve Carrell and John Krasinski are the FUNNIEST people when they crack during a scene. Y'all should seriously watch them on youtube. You won't be disappointed! Here are some from season 3 :)

3. I have a love for lamps.
I bet we have about 10 lamps in our 985-square-foot apartment. Is that a problem? I just think lamps make everything more cozy and warm. I hate flourescent lighting with a passion, and overhead lights can be a little too harsh sometimes. Lamps add the perfect amount of homey-ness (yes, homey-ness). And just this morning, I was thinking how cute a little lamp would look in our bathroom. Oh... obsession.

Okay, so does that make me crazy? And... I'm tagging 3 people to do the same post! Hmmm.... Elaine, Cathryn, and Dr. Joyce!
