Week of October 20th: MWJ EuMW08 Coverage

Our first week of EuMW 2008 pre-show coverage is wrapping up and a number of the MWJ staff are on their way to Amsterdam to get ready for the big conference and exhibition. I will head out Saturday night in order to catch one day of sight-seeing before heading over to the RAI (venue site) to help set up our media center and MWJ booth. This year our booth will be spotlighting the latest updates to our Microwave Journal China Web site. This is a pre-view to the site which will be officially launched in the new year. If you get a chance, stop by for a look and to register onto the web site and to receive our MWJChina newsletter.

Our EuMW08 online show daily has begun streaming news from exhibiting vendors. We have had announcements from RemCom (new software release); Emerson Network Power (four new product lines launched); Acceleware, Z-Communications, Quartzlock and more. Many other announcements are waiting in the pipeline (under embargo until next week), so be sure to check in daily for the latest updates. (http://www.mwjournal.com/News/article.asp?HH_ID=AR_6675)

We have also begun populating the sight with short essays from exhibitors on what they hope to get out of the show. Most exhibitors are looking forward to showing off their latest products and the opportunity for face-to-face meetings with potential customers. Take a preview of what these companies have to offer in our Exhibitor Perspectives (http://www.mwjournal.com/News/article.asp?HH_ID=AR_6676)

or

visit our Virtual Trade Stands (http://www.mwjournal.com/2008/EuMW/VTB/).
for advanced product information and news from these participating vendors.
On Tuesday, Richard Mumford (MWJ European Editor) and I will be interviewing representatives from Anritsu, M/A-Com, Keithley, AWR, Triquint, and Rohde & Schwarz. Be sure to check out the video of these interviews next Wednesday. Till then - safe travels and see you in Amsterdam.

Google App Engine Roadmap - Now Published

Many of you have expressed interest in learning about what's coming next for Google App Engine, and although we've often talked about features we plan on supporting, we've decided to publish this roadmap along with our documentation. Without further ado, here's what we've got coming up in the next 2 quarters:

  • Service for storing and serving large files

  • Datastore import and export utility for large-scale databases

  • Billing: developers can pay for more resource usage

  • Support for a new runtime language

  • Uptime monitoring site

At Google we've historically avoided giving release dates for our products because we know that software development is incredibly hard to predict. Thus, it should be noted that while we're working hard on these features, development schedules do slip at times, and the dates below may change. We'll do our best to update this roadmap as our engineers continue development.

For reference, since our release in April, we've already added:

Remember, you can always let us know what you think on our Google Group!

what's going on??

So I have a little "birdie" that tells me the locations of all the readers of this blog... And this afternoon, there has been a FLOOD of people from all over the world that have been FLOODING onto my "viva las vegas: days 1 & 2" post. I'm talking places like Germany, Romania, UK, Sweden, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Norway, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Slovakia, Ireland, Brazil, Australia, India, Japan, the list keeps going!

Anyone want to tell me what the deal is? It's freaking me out! I may have to go private...this is just weird.

**Update: Funniest thing ever. I found out that it was a bunch of people from a Cast (as in arm cast or whatever cast) Community Message Board and they were looking for pictures of people in casts! Mom, You're FAMOUS! :) At least it's not some creepy thing. I guess.

Introducing Gmail for mobile 2.0

As an engineer on the Gmail for mobile team, I use the Gmail client on my mobile phone all the time. Because of this, I'm always looking for ways to make it faster, more robust and easier to use. Today, we're thrilled to introduce Gmail for mobile version 2.0 for J2ME-supported and BlackBerry phones. Our focus for this version was to make the experience faster and more reliable. We rearchitected the entire client to push all the processing to the background, greatly improve the client-side caching scheme and optimize every bottleneck piece of code we came across.

So, what does this all mean for you?
  • Overall performance improvement: You should experience significant raw speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing.
  • Multiple accounts management: If you have both a Gmail and Google Apps email account, you can easily switch between them quickly. You will no longer have to use two different mobile apps to access personal and work emails.
  • Multiple mobile email drafts: You can save multiple email drafts in your mobile phone, so that you can pick and choose what you would like to send later.
  • Powerful shortcut keys: If you have a QWERTY phone, you can use shortcut keys. Hit 'z' to undo, 'k' to go to a newer conversation, and 'j' to go to an older conversation. See Menu/Help in the app for more shortcuts.
  • Basic offline support: Can't get a signal? Not a problem. You can compose and read your most recent emails even when there is no signal. Also, any outgoing messages will be saved in the outbox on your phone and sent automatically when you're back in coverage.
Also, Gmail for mobile 2.0 is available in over 35 languages now. Please note, though, that not all features are available for all phones.

Go to m.google.com/mail in your mobile browser to download the new Gmail for mobile for your phone.
